Install and set up ego
ego is a browser built for AI. With it, the app posts, replies and finds creators more reliably: the AI works in its own space in ego and leaves your open tabs alone. Without it, the app falls back to the browser extension in Chrome.
ego is free software made by another company. The app doesn't bundle or download it for you; it only sends you to its website.
Install it
- Open Settings → Web & computer → Browser and click “Download” under “Install ego (recommended)”. The same card is in step ④ of first-run setup. The download page picks Mac or Windows for you.
- Mac: drag ego into Applications and open it once. Windows (beta for now): run the installer; if Windows blocks it, click “More info → Run anyway”, then open ego once.
- Finish ego's first-run steps. Importing your Chrome data is optional. The ego site says no account is needed; if your version asks you to sign up, do it on its own page. The app never touches your passwords.
- Back in the app, click “Installed, check again”. When you see “ego is ready”, you're done. If you never picked a browser in Settings, the app now uses ego by default.
Two things to do next
- Inside ego, sign in to the sites you post or reply on (Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, TikTok) with your own accounts.
- Sites like facebook.com ask whether to show notifications. Click “Block” and remember it. Otherwise ego pauses and waits for you; the app pings you in the bell and carries on once you've clicked it.
If it says installed but not connected
- Open ego once and finish its first-run steps, then click “Check again”.
- On Windows, if it mentions “Run as administrator”: close the app and open it normally. ego refuses calls from an app running as administrator.
- Still stuck? Use the browser extension for now. Posting and replying still work; you click send yourself.
To switch back to the extension, choose another option in Settings → Browser and save.
